An Online Petition is Asking the US to Change its National Anthem to Sonic Adventure 2’s “City Escape” and I’m Terrified

When I noticed that Sonic Adventure 2 was a trending topic in my Facebook feed, I immediately assumed the worst. It seems I was right to do so, as I’ve theorized for many years, no good can come of discussing Sonic the Hedgehog on the internet. In one of the stranger Change.org petitions of recent memory, one Gabe Carey is hoping the United States will change its national anthem from “The Star-Spangled Banner” to the opening song from Sonic Adventure 2, Crush 40’s “City Escape.”adventure2-cityescape

This song still brings up fond memories for fans of that little blue hedgehog. Sonic Adventure 2 begins with the hedgehog dropping out of a helicopter on a makeshift snowboard and grinding down the steep roads of a city reminiscent of San Francisco. The lyrics talk about freedom and escaping from a city lurking with danger, themes that really speak to the attitude of Sonic himself.

The petition was started in response to NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand during a performance of the anthem. Kaepernick did so in protest of ongoing oppression against African Americans. Gabey Carey, who started this petition proposes that the upbeat pop-rock song would make a better and more hopeful national anthem for a country so divided. I think it’s safe to assume this is all just a joke, just the same you can sign the petition here.
